UBC Core Internal Medicine
-Interior Program
Big medicine. Small program. A different way to train.
Based primarily at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, the Interior Program offers full Royal College Internal Medicine training in a busy regional referral centre.
Why train here?
Small program — you’ll know your staff, and they’ll know you.
High clinical exposure — complex medicine without competing with layers of learners.
Accessible specialists — work directly with subspecialty faculty.
Graded responsibility — more independence as your skills and confidence grow.
Strong ambulatory training — including longitudinal continuity clinic and subspecialty clinics.
Regional experience — train throughout the BC Interior.
A life outside medicine — skiing, biking, hiking and lakes are minutes away. Our program is designed around education rather than service.
Built for Learning
Our clinical services function without residents. You’re here to learn—not to keep the system running.
That allows us to focus your experience on:
Direct staff supervision and teaching
Clinical opportunities that match your learning needs
Increasing autonomy as you progress
Developing confidence with complex decisions and uncertainty
Learning to lead a clinical team
The goal: become the internist people want beside them when things get complicated.
Broad clinical exposure
Kamloops-based rotations include:
Nephrology - Cardiology - Infectious Diseases - Gastroenterology - Geriatrics - Respirology - Critical Care - Medical Oncology - Addictions Medicine - Palliative Care
Additional regional experiences include:
Rheumatology - Endocrinology - Hematology - Coronary Care - Neurology
Medicine beyond the hospital
Internal Medicine doesn’t just happen on the ward.
Longitudinal continuity clinic beginning in PGY2
Dedicated GIM and subspecialty clinics
Community and outreach experiences
Opportunity to follow patients over time
Significant ambulatory exposure throughout training
Small program. Accessible faculty.
Close working relationships with staff
Individualized mentorship
Increasing independence
Meaningful opportunities to lead
A community where residents become colleagues
And while residency is demanding, we don’t think exhaustion needs to be the curriculum.
And then there’s Kamloops
Ski before work—or after it
Mountain bike from town
Hundreds of lakes nearby
Hiking, paddling, climbing and golf
Short commutes
Four real seasons
Space for a life outside medicine
The Interior is our classroom
Expect approximately two blocks of travel-based training each year, with opportunities across Interior Health:
You’ll experience different hospitals, communities and models of practice—and learn what excellent medicine looks like outside a major tertiary centre.
Excellent training. Meaningful responsibility. A small program in a big clinical environment.
