High Acuity, High Impact

Emergency Medicine at Royal Inland Hospital

High-Acuity, High-Impact Practice in the Heart of BC

Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) in Kamloops is a tertiary care and trauma centre, serving as the regional referral site for 14 rural health centres across a vast swath of British Columbia’s interior. As the base for the Critical Care Paramedic Helicopter program, our Emergency Department sees a high volume of critically ill and injured patients—averaging 225 visits per day (82,000 annually).

This is emergency medicine at full scope.

The Work

As one of the busiest trauma centres in BC, our department offers true full-spectrum emergency medicine:

  • Trauma care (RIH is one of Interior Health’s two designated trauma centres)

  • Pediatrics

  • Complex medical and cardiac resuscitations

Our coverage model includes 11 overlapping physician shifts daily, with solo coverage only from 0300–0600. An Emergency Physician Lead shift helps coordinate flow and reduce interruptions for colleagues. One physician per day is on-call as the Trauma Team Leader.

Education & Mentorship

We’re committed to staying sharp—and sharing what we know. We host twice-monthly Journal Club and M&M Rounds over dinner at one another’s homes, blending education with connection.

  • Our department is deeply involved in teaching, with learners present approximately every third shift:

  • UBC third- and fourth-year medical students

  • UBC Family Medicine residents

  • UBC CCFP(EM) residents (now based in Kamloops)

  • Visiting RCPSC-EM residents

  • Rural physicians participating in the Kamloops Emergency Education Program (KEEP)

Complete ED Rebuild Underway

We’re building the emergency department we’ve always wanted—and it’s halfway done. The first phase is already operational and has been praised for its efficient, ergonomic design. When complete in 2026, the new space will feature:

  • 65 assessment spaces

  • 6 resuscitation bays (4 trauma, 2 respiratory/medical)

  • A dedicated mental health zone

  • Optimized, ergonomic workstations

Average wait times for patients are less than two hours and we anticipate these improving further as more of the new department opens.  Short waits equals happy patients and happy physicians!
