Clinical description

Rehabilitation services is staffed by two RCPSC certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialists who work in close collaboration with a team of rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, orthotists, prosthetists, social workers, dieticians, and rehabilitation aides. The Rehabilitation service spans the continuum of care, from inpatient acute consultations, specialized sub-acute ward care, outpatient department services, and outreach. As a Level II trauma centre, Rehabilitation Services has a broad spectrum of candidates on the continnum of care and recovery.  An integrated Stroke Unit and program is highly developed, with close working relationships with Neurologists and Neurosurgeons.  Electromyography services are integrated into a shared Neurophysiology lab providing consultation to both inpatients and outpatients. 

 

Trainee expectations

Trainees rotating on the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation service will be given graded responsibility based on level of training and experience. The rotation will be offered to all trainees at levels ranging from medical students through to fellowship. A two-week elective rotation promotes experience managing patients with multiple medical co-morbidities as they participate in treatments maximizing function.   A standard week of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation service runs Monday through Friday and includes the following:  

  • Two full day hospital-based consultations on the Rehab Ward

  • Two full day office-based consultations

  • Inpatient consultation service at Royal Inland Hospital

  • Telephone/televideo consultation service to regional physicians

After hours and weekend call is neither mandatory nor expected.  Academic opportunities are entirely elective, but support for research and development of projects exists with affiliations with UBC
